Depending on who you talk to, you may get weird looks for telling someone that you are an R user or a Python user. Both languages have developed significantly over the last few decades and nowadays this language rivalry is unnecessary or simply non-existent.
Aside from the culture war, it is now possible to use one within the others’ environment, using easily installable packages.

Over the past year or so, many of our ‘workplaces’ have, more often than not, shrunk from an office or laboratory to a screen measuring anywhere between 11 and 15 inches. We meet and greet colleagues, new and old, through little rectangles and our small talk has been reduced to noticing new furniture or another room they are in.

I’m always reminded of the so-called ‘birthday problem’ whenever it’s my own birthday. In reality it is a benign combinatorics problem, solvable with a high school level of mathematics. However it was one of those problems that prompted the average joe to think again about scales and how oftentime humans are not so good at grasping them.

Over the last four or so months, I’ve picked up Italian as a new foreign language to learn. It has been a unique and quite satisfying experience for me. I’m using the italki platform as I did for part of my French learning and tidbits of German (my referral link for some free credits!). It has been a unique experience for several reasons: 1.

After writing my first post, I began to reflect on and compare my quite varied experiences in the workplace. In this post I’ll touch on three scales: 1. size of the organisation; 2. hierarchy (or lack thereof); 3. impact of work.
My first full-time role out of my bachelor’s degree was at Australia’s largest commercial bank. I worked on its mortgage portfolio - the largest in the country.

As my first blog post, I thought I’d look back on the last couple of years for some introspection.
After only about six months after starting my full-time job post-graduation did I think about going back to school. I had spent 4 years studying mathematics and statistics and at the two-year mark I was sure that I wanted to pursue a career in quantitative finance.

A Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a 4 digit number that broadly classifies the type of product or service that a business offers. Although there is an ISO standard, finding the appropriate MCC code for those in the payment ecosystem is often a chore.

I started my journey in Switzerland in Lausanne, where I graduated from a Masters in Computational Science and Engineering at EPFL.
Prior to that, I graduated from a Bachelor of Science in Financial Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney. I then worked in various financial institutions both in front office and back office functions.
I grew up in a multicultural, multilingual family on the northern beaches in Sydney, Australia.
